Be open about what you want—and what you don’t want. Don’t assume anyone knows you want the hot new account with a ton of travel or the challenging assignment that will demand long hours or the management position that will take you out of your comfort zone. If you want these things, articulate them. The assumptions in the talent meeting may not be in your favor. Ensure there is another story— the story you want to tell—running the background of the decisionmakers’ minds.

Too often, women make their own bad assumption—that if they put their heads down and work furiously, they will eventually be noticed for their efforts and promoted. If that’s not happening for you, consider your assumptions—and the ones your manager holds. If you have not made it clear to others what you want, don’t assume they’ll be able to figure it out.
